CyPhyLab focuses on architecture and urban design

BuiltbyData is built on cybernetic principles of feedback, learning and emergence using IoT methods, hard- and software.

The Project

Goal?

Built by Data is a project aiming at closing gaps within the digital workflow from design to material choice, construction and production for the architecture and construction industry. The goal is to improve architectural design, buildings and the urban environment through the integration of sensors and evaluation methods using big data analysis, local sensor feedback and the active integration of human users.

What?

In this first phase we are developing a POE Post-Occupancy Evaluation tool to complement our data sets deriving from building performance simulation and real-time data collection and analysis. Built by Data is funded through the European funding line EIT – European Institute of Innovation and Technology – as part of the Research Funding program H2020 – Horizon 2020.

Why?

Built by Data is an interdisciplinary project interweaving parametric architecture, engineering, IoT and human centered  design.Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consetetur sadipscing elitr, sed diam nonumy eirmod tempor invidunt ut labore et dolore magna aliquyam erat, sed diam voluptua. Methods

In the various phases of the looped process we are applying content and task-specific methods using the most appropriate instruments. Instruments, methods and tools combine the analog and digital world in design, fabrication, construction, monitoring, evaluating and feeding back into the design process for the next iteration, a next project. In the first stage we analyze the problem,

depict the situation, internal and external parameters and start asking questions. Two relevant methods are the acts of learning and adapting – only then innovation can flourish and result in a successful project. A further method is the interweaving of preset linear processes with novel dynamic algorithmic processes and surprisingly architectural outcomes. During the design

process we combine digital geo-data analysis with parametric design and algorithmic optimization tools, the fabrication process is fully digitized. The final product will be evaluated through statistical big data analysis of performance by an integration of human feedback and sensoric data collection. A ML/AI component is planned.

Technology and Devices

When it comes to IoT (Internet of Things) we define devices as any component or agent being part of a dynamic interacting cyber-physical system. We include hardware, software, data and behavior alike. Thus in our projects, IoT devices include microprocessors, such as Arduino or Raspberry Pi, weather and light sensors, Appl, data-bases, intelligent cloud solutions, big data analysis, ML, AI, data analytics and data visualization tools and the design process itself.

Arduino

Arduino is an open-source electronics platform based on easy-to-use hardware and software. It’s intended for anyone making interactive projects. www.arduino.com

Sensors and Pi

Data Analytics

Data visualization is the transformation of raw numerical data into graphic form. We use data visualization as tool for communication of information.

ThisWeekinFM.com : Built by Data

The initial design phase is usually digital and agile, however even the design process in the architecture and construction sector is significantly slower than in other industries. Just think of the automotive or manufacturing sectors, where automation and digitisation play key roles throughout the entire production process. Read more..
